You can’t avoid criticism and you can’t please everybody

The second biggest uproar around casting on Zack Snyder’s upcoming “Batman V. Superman: Dawn of Justice,” which Warner Bros. will be releasing next year, came when Gal Gadot was confirmed for the role of Wonder Woman.

Not only is this Wonder Woman’s first big screen outing but she’s also among the first female superheroes to get equal footing with her male counterparts, so fans took to heart the fact that Gadot is a former model who bears no resemblance to the popular DC Comics character.

And it’s ok, Gal says in a new interview cited by Robot Underdog.

She’s skinny and has no breasts, but that doesn’t disqualify her from playing the character

Two of the biggest objections to Gadot playing Wonder Woman were that she’s too skinny and has no breasts. Wonder Woman is an Amazon princess, and she has to have the figure to match: you can’t just put a scrawny, delicate-looking woman in Xena’s discarded outfit and try to pass her for Wonder Woman.

Outraged fans even tried to convince Warner to fire her from the job, launching several petitions online. As was the case with Ben Affleck, they fell on deaf ears - and it’s a good thing that they did.

In the interview, Gal says that she’s used to criticism about her weight or her figure, and she no longer lets it upset her in any way. She knows she can’t please everybody, which is why she’s not even trying anymore, preferring to let her work do all the talking for her.

People have this tendency of projecting their desires and expectations on other people’s work, and this is exactly what happened here as well: Wonder Woman may be based on the DC Comics character, but that doesn’t mean that Snyder’s film version will copy it 100 percent.

So Gadot would probably advise angry fans to wait for the movie to come out and only judge it afterwards, after seeing it on its own.

“A once in a lifetime opportunity”

She has a very good reason for not letting haters bring her down, other than the fact that this would ruin her self-esteem: she’s always wanted to play a character like Wonder Woman, this has always been her biggest career dream.

She’s now living it (and will do so for at least 3 more movies), so she doesn’t want anything to spoil the experience.

“Playing Wonder Women is a once in a lifetime opportunity,” she says. “I always […] wanted to play a woman that is strong and will be a source for women empowerment. I don’t want to play a damsel in distress that needs to be saved. I don’t like it when women in the movies are shown as the victims. I always thought that if I could send out a massage I want to show the strong side of a woman and how she can handle tough situations.”

According to unconfirmed reports online, Wonder Woman will be just that: a fierce warrior, someone who is more than just a pretty face, a well-defined character who will stand as the equal to Superman and Batman.

Gal Gadot joins an impressive cast including Henry Cavill, Amy Adams, Ben Affleck, Jesse Eisenberg, Jason Momoa and Jeremy Irons. “Dawn of Justice” will be out in March 2016.
