The Greenlight service on Steam is one year old and has recently approved its biggest batch yet, 100 indie titles, but the leader of the company wants to make it disappear completely in the future in order to give fans freedom to launch titles via digital distribution without any restrictions.

He tells Gamasutra that “We hope to increase our throughput so significantly that the conversation about selection becomes antiquated. Then we can debate our ability or inability to properly aggregate and display the increased volume of titles being offered.”

Newell also says that Valve is looking for ways to increase the involvement of the community while making sure that votes are never the only criteria on which a game is judged.

Valve has a vision of the future of video game distribution which gives a player complete freedom to explore and choose the experiences that suit him while developers have tools to market and promote their games.
