The GNOME 3.17.2 desktop environment should be released later today, May 27, and it offers a sneak peek at the features that will be available in the upcoming GNOME 3.18 desktop environment, due for release on September 23, 2015.

Several core components of the GNOME desktop have been updated in the last couple of days, including GTK+ 3.17.2, which is, in fact, a major update, bringing numerous new features and under-the-hood improvements.

According to the attached changelog, GTK+ 3.17.2 allows for custom font maps, supports application-specific fonts, and improves the 'no search results' page in the GtkFontChooser component.

The GtkFileChooser component received a 'no search results' page, breadth-first search support, GIO search support for remote shares, and merging of results from the simple search engines and the tracker.

A popover is now used in GtkPlacesSidebar for renaming bookmarks, support for default widgets was implemented in GtkPopover, kinetic scrolling on touchpads is now supported in GtkScrolledWindow, and better error reporting is provided in GtkBuilder.

Wayland, Windows, and OS X builds received improvements

The Windows build of GTK+ 3.17.2 now requires Vista or newer, supports CSS cursor names and animates cursors, supports RGBA windows, and adds support for cursor themes, which requires the new Adwaita icon theme with Windows cursors.

New cursors demo and a new page setup demo were implemented as well in GTK+, along with a port of the builder demo away from GtkUIManager, XRANDR 1.5 monitor objects and CSS cursor names are now supported in X11.

The Wayland implementation received support for CSS cursor names, and better drag-and-drop support in several places. Also, support for CSS cursor names has been implemented in the OS X build of GTK+.

Last but not least, CSS cursor names are now supported across backends in GDK. You can download GTK+ 3.17.2 right now from Softpedia, but please note that this is a pre-release version that contains unresolved issues.
