Says Dan Houser

When Grand Theft Auto IV launched, Microsoft urged a lot of players to buy the Xbox 360 version of the game by promising that it would get massive downloadable content from Rockstar in the fall of 2008. It's one of the reasons why the Xbox 360 version of the game outsold the PlayStation 3 variant.

Now Rockstar and Take Two are getting ready to launch the PC version of their open world game and there's little to no news related to the promised DLC. Microsoft has been reassuringly saying that the promised content would arrive and fans have been speculating that the stuff would include a fresh city or even new gameplay modes. But at the moment, Rockstar seems to be thinking about delaying the DLC until sometime in 2009.

Dan House, co-founder of Rockstar, talked to Variety's gaming blog, the Cut Scene, about the recent launch of GTA IV in Japan and he said a few things about the DLC issue. He revealed that “We hope to be announcing that in the next few weeks. We're still figuring out a few things. We're more focused on quality than dates, always have been. But the development is going really good. It's shaping up to be something we're very proud of. That was our goal”.

It's pretty vague stuff from a developer well known for talking in detail about its games. Rockstar is also now working on Chinatown Wars, a Nintendo DS spin off in the GTA series. And that project might be to blame for the fact that the GTA IV DLC is not coming out as soon as it should. Houser also warned players not to expect too much from the upcoming package because, after all, no one has created an expansion on such a scale for an open world until now.
