GTA 3 has more and more fans despite the increasing controversies and the accusations made by Senator Hillary Clinton that the Rockstar team is racial and sexist.

And when the fans are also skilled in programming, then the result is MultiTheftAuto. What does it do? It adds the last titles from Rockstar a multiplayer component. Therefore, the GTA fans have now the chance to compete against each other and not just with cars and characters controlled by the AI.

MultiTheftAuto 0.5 was conceived without having access to the source code of the game. The team behind the project, among which Ed Lyons, an 18 year old London student and ChrisMcArthur, a 22 year old man, has been working on this project for over one year and consider it more than a multiplayer mode.

MTA intercepts the game's source code and runs as if it was designed by the Rockstar's team itself. The MTA development is based only on open source programs like RakNet and Crazy Eddie's GUI System and as the authors state in the interview OSDir.com this is one of the biggest changes ever brought to a game.

As for the possible legal action taken by Rockstar, it seems that they are not interested in the status of this project as long as it will not be used for commercial purposes.

MultiTheftAuto has also a dedicated web site where you can find out all the details about how to install and create a server.

So, it's open season for GTA3 deathmach!
