GOTY 2012 Worst Disappointment: Medal of Honor: Warfighter

The first-person shooter from EA and Danger Close is filled with cliché moments

We have awarded a variety of great games in Softpedia's GOTY 2012 competition, each more than worthy of their various distinctions, but this year hasn't been filled just with great titles, as quite a few games have disappointed.

Among them, Electronic Arts' Medal of Honor: Warfighter is one of the biggest negative surprises.

While the original Medal of Honor wasn't that great of a game and suffered from rushed development, I enjoyed a few segments of its single-player campaign, especially the epic last stand near the desert hut.

As such, I was looking forward to Warfighter, as it seemed that it was following a similar route, only this time the developers at Danger Close had more than enough time to make sure that the game was a great experience.

Sadly, somewhere along the way, in a bid to deliver the grittiest and most realistic first-person shooter experience out there, Warfighter forgot to actually try and innovate in the genre or to have some fun.

Its single-player campaign is a boring romp through all sorts of cliché moments, from the mandatory beach landing to the mandatory stealth mission to the mandatory sniper section. Pretty much everything that's been done by previous first-person shooters is retreaded in a boring way by Warfighter.

Yes, its visuals were stunning, thanks to the Frostbite 2 engine, and its multiplayer redeemed a few of its negative aspects by introducing novel mechanics like the Fireteam one, but, in the end, it was still a rather boring affair.

Overall, Medal of Honor: Warfighter could have delivered a great and much more realistic warfare experience than other shooters out here, but it only ended up bringing a predictable shooter that, while not doing anything wrong, manages to follow every cliché in the genre's book.

As such, the game is the worst disappointment of 2012.
