Nowadays, it’s getting harder and harder to define a role-playing game, seeing as how quite a lot of other genres are borrowing heavily from classic RPG mechanics, but true fans were treated with plenty of traditional titles, with The Witcher 2 being among the best games released this year.

The original Witcher was a textbook example of a flawed masterpiece, with the team at CD Projekt Red releasing an immersive game based on the universe created by the books of Andrzej Sapkowski, with lots of great ideas but a rather clunky execution.

Things got better with the release of the Enhanced Edition, but nobody expected the full pledged sequel, The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings, to come out as gloriously as it did in May, this year.

The standalone game was very impressive, with some superb graphics aided by plenty of post processing effects that made the whole world seemed even more surreal, not to mention the polished gameplay that, even if it wasn’t as dynamic as the one seen in Dragon Age 2 or The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, delivered a satisfying experience.

While that was still more than satisfying, CD Projekt Red really impressed through its post release strategy, deploying lots of patches and plenty of new missions for the PC role-playing game, delighting fans that invested their money in the title.

This culminated with The Witcher 2 Update 2.0, which added an enhanced tutorial, a more difficult Dark mode, not to mention an Arena one that allowed players to test their combat skills and post their times online, turning the gameplay experience into a more social one.

Now, seeing as how the Polish studio is working hard on the game’s Xbox 360 version, updates haven’t been so frequent, but The Witcher 2 is still a stunning RPG that deserves to be tried out by any fan of the genre.
