The action adventure genre has become almost as all-encompassing as the role-playing one, so we were treated to a lot of worthy titles that fall under this category during 2010.

Among them, though, Sony Santa Monica's God of War III shined through.

What started off as an ambitious project many years ago on the PlayStation 2 became one of the most awaited franchises on the PlayStation 3.

After many years without any detail, the Santa Monica team delivered one of the best looking titles on the Sony console, and a pretty great conclusion to the saga of leading man Kratos.

The title really lived up to its expectations, tweaking up the hack and slash gameplay, while keeping things like combos largely the same.

It set a new benchmark in terms of QuickTime events, and produced, with the risk of sounding filled with clichés, a truly cinematic experience.

God of War III continues the story of Kratos as he embarks on a journey to slay the Greek gods of Olympus, and complete his revenge quest.

While some categorized it as a bloody hack and slash, which lets you dismember enemies into tiny bits and pieces, we shouldn't forget that God of War III also had plenty of intricate puzzles, with Hera's maze standing above all else in terms of scope.

Still, even if its graphics were top notch, its gameplay almost flawless and its action truly mesmerizing, God of War III did lack in the story department.

The ending especially garnered a lot of mixed responses, with some loving the direction taken by Sony Santa Monica, while others were completely turned off by the ideas portrayed.

Still, even with such reactions, God of War III remains one of the must-play titles this year, and the runner up in our Best Action Adventure category.

God of War III is available exclusively on the PlayStation 3.
