A couple of new Linux games have arrived

The GOG.com distribution platform is now offering games under the Lucasfilm umbrella and a few of them also have Linux versions.

The GOG.com gaming distribution service has started offering Linux games just for a few months, but it already surpassed the 100-title mark. The service generally offers older games that have been revived with the help of the original developers, but for Linux GOG.com actually hired programmers that can help with this difficult task. You have to remember that many of the studios that made these games, more than a decade ago, no longer exist, so it's very difficult to bring some of these titles to life.

To make things even more complicated, some games actually have problems with the ownership rights. Publishers have disbanded, rights have been lost, franchises have switched hands numerous times, so getting the approval or the collaboration to make an old game working again can be quite laborious.

GOG.com are DRM free

There is one common characteristic that is true for all the titles launched through this service, and that is they don't ship with kind of DRM (digital rights management protection). The users of this service just get the package and they can install it on as many computers as they want, without any kind of restrictions for copying or personal backups. The same holds true for the few Lucasfilm games that were just made available.

"The day has finally come and the holy grail of classic gaming has arrived on GOG.com. Welcome, Lucasfilm games! You are among friends, here! We're proud to announce our team-up with Disney Interactive that allows for the DRM-free release of 20+ classic titles from the cult-classic developer."

"We know you waited long for this moment, so we want to reunite you with those golden oldies with as little delay as possible. Today, to start with a bang, we are releasing a selection of 6 acclaimed titles from Lucasfilm's most famous gaming franchises, so that the Lucasfilm/Disney catalog on GOG.com is made impressive from day one," reads the announcement on the official website.

The new games are Star Wars: X-Wing Special Edition, Star Wars: TIE Fighter Special Edition, Sam & Max Hit the Road, The Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition, Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis, and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. Unfortunatelly, only Sam & Max Hit the Road and Indiana Jones have Linux support, but only a small part of the Lucasfilm catalog has been revealed so far.
