Orca, the default screen reader and magnifier utility that is distributed as part of the GNOME desktop environment and used by default in numerous Linux distributions, including Ubuntu, has been updated to version 3.16.1.

Orca 3.16.1 includes a number of improvements, bug fixes, and updated translations aimed to keep the application reliable and usable for all users, which means that distribution vendors are urged to update it as soon as possible.

According to the internal release notes, Orca 3.16.1 is here to add a workaround for a missing object:state-changed:focused event from the GTK+ GUI toolkit, as well as to address an issue where translated symbols were being offered in English.

Moreover, the first maintenance release of the Orca 3.16 screen reader and magnifier now uses separate localedir and datadir instead of DATADIRNAME, fixes a bug where speak child position breaks Qt menu item presentation, and only shows placeholder text if a value is missing from an entry.

Several other issues were resolved, and translations updated

In addition to the above, Orca 3.16.1 now uses labelAndName instead of labelOrName with toggle buttons, which means that the application will fall back to the description when a name is not provided.

This release fixes a hang when attempting to load web pages, as it no longer searches for replicants for Gecko zombies, and it does not present the position in the list for the top-level menu of a context menu. For more details, do not hesitate to read the official release notes of Orca 3.16.1.

Last but not least, several language translations have been updated in this first point release of Orca 3.16, including Bulgarian, Icelandic, Italian, Russian, and Slovenian.
