The Orca open-source screen reader and magnifier software that is used by default in numerous Linux kernel-based operating systems, including Ubuntu, has received a new update in preparation for GNOME 3.17.2.

GNOME 3.17.2 is a development milestone towards the upcoming GNOME 3.18 desktop environment, due for release on September 23, 2015. Orca 3.17.2 was released on May 27 and will be distributed as part of GNOME 3.17.2.

According to the attached changelog, Orca 3.17.2 comes with updated spellchecking support that brings compatibility with recent versions of the Mozilla Thunderbird email and news client.

Among other changes, we can mention fixes for multiple failures related to presenting the last line in a text area, moving to a newly loaded page fragment, as well as to presenting the right radio button state and expanded state change in ARIA content.

Search results will no longer be presented twice, several SayAll issues have been fixed, braille won't be re-generated if it is not required, and an issue related to displaying focus changes between the child link and the document frame has been fixed.

The command state will now automatically reset itself when deactivating the Gecko script to make sure the content is displayed after using the Alt+Tab keyboard shortcut to switch to the Mozilla Firefox web browser.

Several other issues have been addressed in Orca 3.17.2

In addition to the changes mentioned above, Orca 3.17.2 fixes several other issues related to the pyatspi cache, which was not updated correctly, as well as to the recurring of tutorial messages when the user navigates the same type of items.

Lastly, a workaround has been added for some missing object:state-changed:focused events from GTK+, and traceback is now properly handled when calling the findAllDescendants function in defective implementation.

The Catalan, Spanish, Norwegian bokmal, and Occitan translations have been updated. Download Orca 3.17.2 right now from Softpedia. Please try to keep in mind that this is a pre-release version that contains unresolved issues.
