The GNOME Project, through Florian Müllner, announced on April 14 the immediate availability for download of GNOME Shell 3.16.1, the first maintenance release of the GNOME 3.16 desktop environment.

The fact of the matter is that GNOME Shell 3.16.1 will be distributed as part of the soon-to-be-released GNOME 3.16.1 desktop environment. According to the raw changelog, the first maintenance release of GNOME Shell 3.16 introduces a workaround for the background corruption with the proprietary Nvidia video driver.

Long session chooser menus in the GDM (GNOME Display Manager) login screen have been moved to the side, move-to-workspace is no longer allowed for windows that are always sticky, and support for switching workspaces using the Page Up and Page Down buttons has been implemented in the Overview mode.

In addition, PAM messages are now displayed for a longer period, the blurred text issue on the login screen has been fixed, a slowness issue that occurred when moving windows past the last workspace has been addressed, and it is now possible to dismiss resident notifications.

The on-screen keyboard now works on the Wayland port

GNOME Shell 3.16.1 makes the on-screen keyboard to work for shell chrome on the Wayland port, passes even timestamps when remote actions are activated, makes the legacy tray to temporarily appear when icons are added, and implements the reexec_self() function for the FreeBSD operating system.

Moreover, the entire MRU (Most Recently Used) list is now automatically restored after password mode, the concealed tray has been made smaller in order to minimize overlap with applications, and a login screen hang that occurred when typing passwords very fast has been addressed.

Several other bugs have been squashed, and the Slovak, Argentinian, Russian, Latvian, and Dutch language translations have been updated in the first maintenance release of the GNOME Shell 3.16 user interface for the GNOME 3.16.1 desktop environment.  Download GNOME Shell 3.16.1 right now from Softpedia.
