The old GNOME and GNOME Classic entries are still present

GNOME developers are moving forward with their plans to integrate Wayland as a regular displayer server, and GNOME 3.12 users will be able to choose at login what to use.

GNOME developers have announced that Wayland will be available for users in the 3.12 branch but, unfortunately, only as a tech preview. Even if Wayland is quite advanced in the development cycle, integrating it with GNOME and using GNOME Shell as a compositor is not exactly easy.

Therefore, the GNOME developers have decided that it's not yet the proper time for a default Wayland solution. Now, according to a worldofgnome.org report, users will be able to find the GNOME on Wayland option in the GNOME Displayer Manager greeter during the login procedures, under GNOME and GNOME Classic.

GNOME on Wayland is still under development and it will probably remain that way for some time. The 3.12 branch of GNOME has yet to be released and there is a long way to go before the next 3.14 stable branch is made available.

The battle between the two major displayer servers that are currently being groomed to replace X, Mir, and Wayland, is still being fought, although it's done in a friendlier and more constructive note. It's still hard to tell if one of them will get on top or if both will register success, but it's very likely that they will influence each other during the development process.
