The GNOME Project will release the first milestone of the upcoming GNOME 3.18 desktop environment in the first week of May 2015, which means that some of GNOME's core components and applications received the 3.17.1 update.

GNOME Boxes, the open source virtual machine manager of the GNOME desktop environment, was updated today, April 28, to version 3.17.1, bringing assorted new features and bug fixes over GNOME Boxes 3.16.

According to the internal release notes, GNOME Boxes 3.17.1 adds a "Restart" button for libvirt machines to the Properties view, adds a "Force shutdown" option in both the hamburger and context menus, and it now offers a symbolic icon.

Another interesting feature implemented in GNOME Boxes 3.17.1 is better support for the latest Windows ISO images that include CAPS letters in their filenames. This was possible thanks to a new function that automatically checks the case-insensitive extension of files.

The UI received minor improvements and translations were updated

The first milestone release of GNOME Boxes 3.18 no longer adds USB input devices if the guest machine supports them, but only to newer virtual machines, and it now automatically dismisses the Properties window on force shutdown or restart.

Moreover, the user interface of GNOME Boxes received various minor improvements, automatic saving will now work only for running virtual machines, and the "Delete" option will no longer appear in the hamburger menu.

Lastly, the "Saving..." status will now disappear only when the saving operation fails, and the Czech and Greek language translations have been updated. You can download GNOME Boxes 3.17.1 right now via Softpedia, but please keep in mind that this version is unstable and it might contain unresolved issues.
