European citizens decided that the Italian company Chelys is the big winner of the Global Monitoring for Environment and Security (GMES) Masters competition. The corporation was awarded the prize for their proposed Satellite Rapid Response System.

The other winners and their respective prizes will be announced during an upcoming ceremony, to be held on Wednesday, October 19. All selections were made online, where visitors to the competition's official website could see everything the companies had to offer.

The goal of the new competition was to call on companies to present services and ideas that could be used to boost the potential uses of Earth observation data collected by future GMES satellite networks.

“This part of the competition invited service providers to upload profiles of their existing services to the GMES Masters competition website. Visitors to the website then had the opportunity to vote for the service they found most beneficial to European citizens,” an ESA press release reports.
