40-year-old Robach says she never imagined the life she’d save would be her own

A short while ago, Amy Robach, one of the anchors on Good Morning America, agreed to have a mammography on-air as part of GMA’s campaign to raise awareness on the importance of early testing in breast cancer. She is now ready to disclose the result of the tests and to go public with the fact that she has breast cancer.

The two videos embedded below are testament to how brave she is and how dedicated she remains to use her own story to convince other women to get tested, because, as with other types of cancer, with breast cancer too early detection is essential.

The first video is the segment showing Amy agreeing to get the mammography in the GMA van. She says that she hopes her example will motivate at least one woman to get tested and, this way, save her life. Little did she imagine that the life she’d save would be her own.

The second video is of Amy on the couch with Robin Roberts, a cancer survivor as well, in which she explains her plans for the future and expresses her gratitude for pushing her to get tested.

“Thank God you did. I had cancer the whole time we were sitting in that office, and I said, ‘I don’t have any connection to that disease’,” Robach says.

She knows she has cancer but doesn’t know how advanced she is or which are her options until after surgery: Robach has opted to have a double mastectomy and then reconstructive surgery. She explains that it was her decision to be as “aggressive” as possible with the disease.

“There’s a lot you don’t know until you have the surgery. I don’t know about chemo. I don’t know what stage I am. I don’t know if it has spread. So we’ll find out those things in the weeks to come,” she says.

Robach also talks about her family, making it obvious that a strong support system is vital in such situations. Amy is lucky: she has husband Andrew Shue, whom fans recognize from the original “Melrose Place,” her children, her parents, and her friends and relatives rooting for her.
