The company has made some improvements to the web security and filtering solution

GFI Software has announced the availability of GFI WebMonitor 2013, the latest version of the firm’s Web security and filtering solution designed to help small and medium businesses (SMBs) better protect their infrastructures against cyber threats.

The latest variant of WebMonitor 2013 allows organizations to extend their corporate browsing policies to portable devices such as laptops or notebooks. This way, employees benefit from filtering protection even if they leave the office.

GFI believes that such solutions have become a necessity, especially now that more and more companies allow their staff to access corporate resources remotely. While this trend has its benefits, it also comes with a lot of risks, and a lot of headaches for IT managers.

One benefit is that IT managers can apply filtering policies based on the device’s location. For instance, streaming media can be allowed when the device leaves the corporate network, but adult and gambling sites are still blocked.

Another advantage of GFI WebMonitor is that it doesn’t impact connectivity speeds.

“The line defining the amount of control IT managers can have over users’ activity on work-issued devices is always blurred. A balance needs to be struck, as implementing too many browsing regulations can make employees unhappy and impede productivity,” said David Attard, product manager at GFI Software.

“Yet, without enough controls in place businesses open themselves up to a variety of legal and security risks. GFI WebMonitor’s new roaming agent provides IT with the best of both worlds,” he added.

“They can give employees the freedom to use the Internet as they wish, while putting access controls in place to prevent them from visiting websites that could cause malware infections or legal liabilities. In other words, they can sleep well at night knowing their employees – and their business – are well-protected.”
