GFI Software, a company whose solutions are designed mainly for small and mid-sized businesses, has launched a new version of the network vulnerability scanning and patch management solution LanGuard. Compared to the first revision, GFI LanGuard 2014 R2 comes with several improvements.

Patch management and vulnerability assessment have become increasingly important in protecting organizations against cyber threats, including for small businesses.

GFI LanGuard 2014 R2 extends vulnerability assessment to network devices from a larger number of companies, not just Cisco and HP. Furthermore, it also extends mobile device auditing for cloud-based services.

The latest version of GFI LanGuard includes patch management capabilities for Fedora. Furthermore, the solution is designed to help organizations produce dedicated reports for CIPA compliance.

The first release of LanGuard 2014 supports vulnerability assessment for Cisco and HP hardware, but the new version has been expanded to include network devices from Linksys, Juniper, Dell, SonicWALL, 3Com, Nortel, IBM, Alcatel and NETGEAR.

Furthermore, customers can now also run vulnerability assessments for mobile devices that connect to cloud services like Office 365, Google Apps or Apple Profile Manager.

As far as vulnerability assessment for Microsoft Exchange servers is concerned, GFI LanGuard 2014 R2 now lists security policies that apply to each mobile device used by employees.

Organizations that use GFI’s solution can monitor their entire networks to ensure that it’s patched from a single central console.

Small businesses are increasingly targeted by cybercriminals, the latest Verizon Data Breach Investigations Report has revealed.

Other studies have highlighted the fact that IT administrators are increasingly concerned about the Internet of Things. The more devices are connected to the Web the more exposed an organization is.

“A network is as vulnerable as its weakest point, so businesses must not neglect the combined threat of an explosion in mobile devices connecting to their network coupled with routers, printers and switches,” noted Cristian Florian, product manager at GFI Software.

“GFI LanGuard 2014 R2 adds support for vulnerability across the security spectrum so companies can protect their entire network,” Florian added.

GFI LanGuard 2014 R2 is available immediately based on a full annual subscription licensing model. Additional information on GFI LanGuard 2014 R2 is available on GFI Software’s website.

Pricing starts at £8 ($13) for between 250 and 499 nodes (VAT not included). However, a free 30-day trial is also available for those who want to try out the product before purchasing it.
