The Game Developers Choice Lifetime Achievement
Award recognizes the career and achievements of a developer who has made an indelible impact on the craft of game development and games as a whole. This year's winner is the legendary Sid Meier, the one responsible for
innovatory strategy titles such as Civilization or
Pirates!
The awards ceremony will be held on the 20th of February in conjunction with the Independent Game Festival in San Francisco. Some other great names from the gaming industry are expected at the festivity, together with the latest award winner, Sid Meier.
"Sid Meier has served as one of our industry's greatest role models for more than 25 years, creating fun and intelligent games for a diverse public long before it was popular," said Jamil Moledina, executive director of the Game Developers Conference. "Now that the rest of the industry is actively targeting the broader audience, it's fitting to honor him with our highest award and thank him for his continuing example of inspiration for the video game community."
Sid Meier is already recognized around the world as the "Father of Computer Gaming", after he started his career as a founding partner of MicroProse Software. He's not at all new to award winning, in fact, he has won about every single award in the industry and some might still feel that it's not enough to repay him for creating some of the game legends of today, like F-19, Sid Meier's Civilization, Railroad Tycoon or Sid Meier's Pirates!
The awards are being decided after judging the public nominees, and GDC has some big names in the Advisory Board, such as John Vechey, Hal Barwood, Bob Rafei, Mark Cerny, Susan O'Connor, Raph Koster, Julien Merceron, Clinton Keith, Clint Hocking, Brian Reynolds or Ray Muzyka. Also, the Game Developers Choice is one of the most-valued award ceremony in the gaming industry.
