Today, South Korean mobile phone maker Samsung Electronics announced officially that its first Android-based tablet PC, the Samsung GALAXY Tab, is set to arrive on shelves in Australia in the week starting on November 8th, while featuring a RRP of AUD $999.

The handset vendor also announced that it would make the slate available via various retailers around the country, as well as through various mobile carriers, on different cap plans.

The Samsung GALAXY Tab is set to arrive on shelves in Australia with a series of pre-loaded applications, such as an Australian e-reading with 1,600 newspapers, 2,500 magazines and two million e-books via Samsung Readers Hub.

At the same time, the mobile phone maker announced that GALAXY Tab will include turn-by-turn navigation by NAVIGON, along with a two month trial of The Australian news application, and the Need For Speed SHIFT game from Electronic Arts.

The Samsung tablet PC runs under Google's Android 2.2 Froyo operating system, and packs a 7-inch touchscreen display, complemented by a 1GHz application processor for great performance levels.

The device also comes with support for 3G networks, as well as with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity, GPS receiver, microSD memory card slot, and a 4,000 mAh battery for extended usage time.

Moreover, the upcoming Samsung GALAXY Tab sports two cameras, a 3-megapixel one on the back, complemented by a 1.3MP camera on the front, great for video calling.

We should also mention that the slate will arrive on shelves with enhanced support for various Google services, as well as with the possibility to run applications available for download and installation via the Android Market.

Samsung is committed to providing compelling Australian apps with the Samsung GALAXY Tab, so whether you’re a news junkie, gaming fanatic, keen traveler or avid reader, our tablet device offers a wealth of portable entertainment,” said Tyler McGee, Vice President of Telecommunications, Samsung Electronics Australia.

“Research shows that of Australians intending to purchase a tablet device, 64% of them intend to use it for navigation and e-reading applications, 73% for consuming news and 74% for gaming. We believe the size of the Samsung GALAXY Tab will be key in satisfying these consumer needs.”

The NAVIGON solution included with Samsung GALAXY Tab should offer 2D and 3D map views, turn-by-turn voice guidance, drive and walk modes and intelligent address search.

Through The Australian news application, users will receive instant access to the latest news in the country, with content that includes News, Opinion, National Affairs, World News, Features, Business, Australian IT and Sport.

Not to mention that Samsung GALAXY Tab hits Australia with the full version of the Need For Speed SHIFT game from Electronic Arts.

“Customers who purchase a Samsung GALAXY Tab can download for free from Samsung Apps the full Need For Speed SHIFT game from Electronic Arts,” Samsung announced.

“An award winning racing game, Need For Speed SHIFT combines true driver simulations with real world physics to create an addictive gaming experience. When combined with the Samsung GALAXY Tab’s striking seven inch display, you’ll feel like you’re in the driver’s seat of a high-end performance car.”
