G.Skill Releases 16GB DDR2-800 Memory Kit

- You should check if your motherboard supports that much RAM first

By: Bogdan Botezatu, Hardware Editor

Having piles of system RAM did never hurt anybody, or at least this is what memory manufacturer G.Skill wants us to believe with the introduction of its new memory products. The company has just released
some fresh spring offerings to go along with the new gaming rigs powered by Nvidia's GeForce 9800 GX2.

G.Skill started shipping a 4 x 4 GB as well as a 2 x 4 GB memory kit with CL5 clock latency (5-5-15). Another recently launched product from the Taiwanese memory manufacturer is a 2 GB DDR3-1800 "energy-efficient" memory kit, that comes with two 1GB memory cards.

Despite the fact that the 2 GB kits hardly impress anyone since memory got extremely cheap, one significant aspect of the NQ series is the fact that it works by default at 1.5 volts, exactly the value specified in the JEDEC standard.

The high-capacity memory modules, however, keep their 1.8 volt specifications. The 16GB package is addressed to professional users who work with memory intensive applications, such as graphics, video or audio software. Of course, if you're one of the hardcore gamers who don't like the Skulltrail platform (working with FB-DIMM memory), you can stuff the memory DIMMS on your high-end motherboard, then go back to fragging without too much concern towards the FPS rate.

The 16 GB kit on four 4GB DDR2 modules is certified to work at 800 MHz. The memory modules come with aluminum heatspreaders to dissipate the heat from the memory chips. The memory kits are backed up by a lifetime warranty, but before buying it, it's recommendable that you check your motherboard if it supports this much memory.

According to the manufacturer, the 16 GB memory kits are guaranteed to work on motherboards based on Intel P35, X38 and X48 chipsets as well as on computers with AMD chipsets for the AM2 platform, such as 790FX, 780G, 690G, nForce 590 or nForce 570.
