Even though, at the beginning of consumer computing, overclocking was against the wishes of CPU makers, AMD and Intel were eventually forced to give in to public pressure and began to release parts specifically designed to allow such enthusiasts to experiment with voltages and clock settings. Before long, an entire community of such people was created, each eager to outmatch his or her peers by achieving a never before seen benchmarking result or chip frequency.

Futuremark already has the habit of staging an overclocking competition each year, meant to establish who exactly is the greatest overclocker in Asia, Europe and the Americas. Today, the corporation announced the start of this year's edition, set to last between June 21 and July 18. Participants will use 3DMark 06 and MSI motherboards to compete for the title of “Lord of Overclocking” for their region.

"We are excited to bring the world’s most talented overclockers together for our annual Lords of Overclocking competition," said Jukka Makinen, Futuremark CEO. "With great prizes on offer from some of the most recognized names in PC performance it promises to be a great event that is sure to set new records."

"It’s really our honor to join the highest standard overclocking competition with Futuremark again. We believe there will be excellent winners to join our Master Overclocking Arena 2010 Grand Final," said Jason Lee, marketing director of MSI.

The prizes that the Futuremark CEO referred to are many, with the list including such top-tier hardware as MSI Big Bang Xpower and P55-GF85 motherboards. High-end graphics cards, power supplies, computer cases, memory kits and CPU coolers, among other things, are also part of the list. 3DMark 06 benchmark scores will be the means for evaluating PC gaming hardware.
