Benchmark producer FutureMark released a new testing tool for mobile phone performances called SPMark Java06. This application focuses on measuring the performance of high- and low-detail 3D games, 2D games, image processing and the Java Virtual Machine (JVM). As an extra feature, SPMarkJava06 provides tools for measuring the battery-life and checking the video (H.263) playback functionality of the device. Having a tool that establishes the exact battery life of mobile handsets is a very important feature for this suite.

SPMark Java06 is available as a $20 developer-only package, a $3 application with game, or a free suite of basic tests. Consumers can download the free version from the FutureMark web site and test their PDAs or mobile phones.

FutureMark also announced yesterday the release of 3DMark 06 Mobile, which is the mobile version of the famous desktop benchmark. This new version supports OpenGL ES 1.0 and 1.1 and is based on more accurate tests, for Windows i386, Windows CE and Symbian.
