8.1 Update is mandatory because all future Windows updates will be based on it

If you’re wondering what the reason behind Microsoft’s decision to make Windows 8.1 Update mandatory for all those running Windows 8.1 is, the company says that it had to make this change because all future Windows improvements will actually be based on this particular OS version.

Therefore, all those running Windows 8.1 must move to Windows 8.1 Update by May 13, while enterprise have a little bit more time, so they can do it until mid-August.

Microsoft’s Brandon LeBlanc said in a post today that all customers running Windows 8.1 need to deploy the update in order to receive future security updates and all the other improvements that the operating system might receive.

“All future security and non-security updates will be built on these latest product updates, so existing Windows 8.1 customers (as well as Windows Server 2012 R2 and Windows Embedded 8.1 Industry customers) will need to be running these latest product updates in order to continue to receive future product improvements and security updates,” he wrote.

Windows 8.1 Update is currently being delivered to Windows 8.1 users via Windows Update, so you can always get it free of charge with just a few clicks and using your Internet connection exclusively. The update measures nearly 890 MB in size, so it could take a while to deploy it.
