The current version of the game cannot support the mechanics

Jeff Strain, the leader of the development team at Undead Labs, says that any future versions of the Xbox Live hit State of Decay will focus on creating a solid cooperative multiplayer experience, with single player just a secondary concern.

The developer states on the official forums that his team was interested in coop, but while it was remaking the game engine, it simply lacked time to add the mechanics before launch.

State of Decay would have required another six months of development for them.

Strain says, “We know co-op is the most requested addition to State of Decay, and we’ve also continued to hope it might be a possibility after release. Unfortunately, after reevaluating it over the past few weeks, we believe our original estimate of six months is optimistic; the actual time is probably closer to nine months.”

He also believes that many fans might be disappointed with the coop experience and would stop Undead Labs from launching any other DLC and title updates.

Strain adds, “We want to see a multiplayer State of Decay as badly as you do, but it’s not feasible to retrofit it into the existing game.”

Since State of Decay became one of the best-selling games on Xbox Live, Undead Labs has suggested that a sequel is already in the planning stages and would deliver a bigger open world and cooperative mechanics.

The game offers an interesting zombie experience because it does not focus on actually fighting the undead.

The player has to gather resources and build a secure base that can house a lot of survivors without actually attracting too much attention from the undead enemies, who can pose a problem to even the best equipped gamer.

Undead Labs has plans to also launch State of Decay on the PC in the coming months.
