Company trumpets enterprise storage products that use PCI Express x8

Distinguishing itself from Plextor, whose new SSDs are designed for 'regular' PC systems, Fusion-io has developed a pair of PCI Express models whose main role is to serve enterprise applications.

People who want a solid state drive for their desktop, whether at home or at work, can look at this new duo.

Those who, on the other hand, want a capacious and fast solution for data databases, virtual environments and any other enterprise applications might want to check out the ioDrive2 and ioDrive 2 Duo PCI-Express units instead.

Those built out of MLC (multi-level cell NAND Flash memory chips) have capacities of 365GB / 785GB / 1.2TB (ioDrive2) or 2.4 TB (ioDrive2 Duo).

Meanwhile, the SLC-based drives can store 400 GB / 600 GB and 1.2 TB, respectively.

“Customers have grown to expect nothing but groundbreaking products from Fusion-io. Today, we are proud to raise the bar once more with the ioDrive2,” said David Flynn, Fusion-io CEO and Chairman.

“Just as many competitors gauge success by Fusion-io performance standards, we developed the ioDrive2 to outperform the original ioDrive on all measures. Companies around the world trust ioMemory to supply critical data to their trading platforms, ERP systems, virtual environments, enterprise applications and databases, and now, they can rely on the ioDrive2 to accelerate even more of the data that powers our information economy.”

The newcomers have the PCIe x8 interface and the VSL 3.0 software subsystem, which includes the Adaptive FlashBack self-healing feature, allowing self-repair in case of single or multi-chip failure.

The MLC drives will ship next month (November, 2011), for $5,950 (4,502 Euro) or more, while the SLC drives will arrive later on.

Finally, for those that want specs, the speeds are of 1.5 GB/s when reading and 1.3 GB/s when writing, while the random 512kB read/writes are of 352,000/514,000 IOPS.
