Funambol, the largest provider of open source mobile push email and PIM synchronization, announced the release of myFUNAMBOL, a portal that gives users free access to email, contacts and calendars on their cell phones. Also, the portal is the first to offer over-the-air contacts synchronization for the recently released iPhone.

myFUNAMBOL allows users to get free mobile email on their phones from Yahoo!, Gmail and AOL, as well as from other email service providers that offer POP/IMAP access. It eliminates the manual configuration of mobile email and PIM synchronization for many mobile phones with over-the-air configuration. The portal includes an address book and calendar for synchronizing contact and calendar data from popular email clients such as Microsoft Outlook and Mozilla Thunderbird, as well as over-the-air with mobile handsets.

The portal enables iPhone users to access their myFUNAMBOL address book on their phone, allowing them to view contacts from multiple sources and use them to place calls, send email and map locations using Google Maps. myFUNAMBOL facilitates the transition to the iPhone by allowing users to get their address book from their older handset to the iPhone. This can be achieved by synchronizing contacts from other phones (or from Outlook or other email clients such as Mozilla Thunderbird), over-the-air, to myFUNAMBOL. The contacts are then available on the iPhone by simply logging in at my.funambol.com/iphone from the phone's browser.

"The iPhone is the most anticipated phone in the history of the mobile industry, and Funambol is very excited to offer the first over-the-air application to enable iPhone users to use their preexisting contacts to drive iPhone services such as mobile email, Google Maps and voice calls," commented Fabrizio Capobianco, CEO of Funambol. "At this momentous time in the industry, Funambol is also pleased to unveil myFUNAMBOL, which makes it super easy for people to get their mobile email, contacts and calendars on everyday cell phones." Besides the iPhone, myFUNAMBOL supports a long list of devices, including the iPod and phones from Nokia, Motorola, Samsung, Sony Ericsson and LG.

The use of the myFUNAMBOL portal is free of charge, however, if users use it to synchronize data with a wireless device, an Internet data plan from the mobile operator is recommended. myFUNAMBOL is currently in beta and is available to users by invitation only. Interested users can request an invitation here.
