The company wants a bigger experience with an exploration focus

The development team at the Fullbright Company says that they do not have plans to replicate the experience they have created for Gone Home in their next project, as they try for a way to deliver an expanded set of gameplay mechanics.

Steve Gaynor, one of the founders of the studio, tells Rock, Paper, Shotgun that, “We want to expand the scope of the next game slightly. We don’t want to limit ourselves, so we’re exploring what we want to do next, because we don’t want it to be the same thing. We don’t want it to be Gone Home in a different house or whatever.”

The developer says that despite the story focus of Gone Home, his team was careful to craft a set of mechanics that drew the player in and allowed them to space out the narrative elements and create an intriguing feeling of exploration and mystery.

He adds, “We do want our next game to stand on its own and be a little bit more expanded of a production. But on the other hand, it’s not like we want to hire a team of 50 and become something that is totally divorced from what we’ve already done. It’s just, slow sensible expansion to support what we want to do next, I think.”

Fullbright’s next project has not yet been officially revealed but the company plans to continue to work around traditional classic gameplay elements like win and lose states.

Fans can also rest assured that combat, character optimization or mechanical progression will not be included in the game, and a big chunk of resources will be devoted to the story.

Gone Home has been one of the best indie titles launched last year, and despite its low profile it has managed to move more than half a million copies to gamers, including the version which offers extensive developer commentary.
