Sunnyvale-based mobile phone maker Palm announced a few days ago the launch of a new handset based on its fresh webOS operating system, the Palm Pixi, which is set to come to the US market on Sprint's airwaves. The company also unveiled a series of details regarding the handset's specifications, yet now we can take a closer look at the processor Palm has packed inside this smartphone.

For starters, we should mention that the Palm Pixi is powered by the Qualcomm MSM7627 chipset, which “is designed to enable mass-market devices with advanced functionality and rich multimedia capabilities that take advantage of the broadband data speeds available through 3G networks worldwide,“ as Palm Infocenter notes, citing Qualcomm.

Specifically, the Qualcomm MSM7627 chipset includes two ARM cores into the same chip: a dedicated CPU core and a dedicated modem processor. The applications processor is clocked at 600MHz, while the modem processor runs at 400MHz. The chipset comes to the market with CDMA2000 1xEV-DO Rev. A, UMTS HSDPA 7.2Mbps/HSUPA 5.76Mbps, and GSM connectivity options.

Things go even better, as “the MSM7627 solution features an industry-leading level of integration, enabling devices with high-end functionality to be slimmer, sleeker and last longer on a single battery charge. Powerful multimedia capabilities integrated into the MSM7627 chipset translate [in]to a richer, more compelling experience while browsing the web, accessing online applications, playing 3D games, capturing high-resolution pictures and video, and more.”

To be more precise, the multimedia capabilities of the chip come from the fact that it sports a 320MHz application DSP in addition to the two ARM cores (which enable 30 fps WVGA encode/decode), as well as a 200MHz hardware-accelerated 3D graphics core (which delivers support for OPEN GL 2.0), camera, and integrated GPS, all in a 12mm x 12mm footprint. Given the fact that the chipset also has low power consumption, we can say that Pixi will prove to be a great device when available on the market.
