Moving forward

Star Trek Online is now out and Cryptic Studios, the developer of the MMO, is quickly moving to talking about the wonderful things they plan to offer to players in the coming weeks and months. This might be seen as an answer to players’ complaining about the limited content offered in the initial release of the game or just as serious dedication to the game they have made.

It seems that one of the next steps for Star Trek Online will be allowing the player to actually explore the entirety of their own ship, which, at the moment, can only be experienced from the outside or from the confines of the bridge section.

Craig Zinkievich, who is the executive producer working on Star Trek Online, told IncGamers that “Anything we can do to make the game feel even more like Star Trek is something we want to do. So, definitely, we want to give people more of their ship. This is one of those things we want to get perfect before introducing it to players, though it’s going to be an undertaking.”

The move makes sense when thinking about the Star Trek movies and various series, where quite a bit of action takes place inside the ship, often in some very specific locations. The Medbay could open up more conversation options and research, the Holodeck could allow players to practice their combat moves before actually venturing out to the surface of a planet, and a walk to Ten Forward could open up more interaction options with other players.

Full ship exploration also opens up the possibility of missions built around boarding parties trying to take over the ship. And Cryptic could even add some transporter incidents to investigate in true Star Trek fashion. The studio has not said when full ship exploration could be introduced.
