Fujitsu has revealed the existence of Cloud Security Alliance’s (CSA) Big Data Working Group, an entity whose main role is to find solutions for the security challenges posed these days by big data.

The group will be chaired by Sreeranga Rajan – director of software systems innovation at Fujitsu Laboratories of America –, Neel Sundaresan of eBay and Wilco Van Ginkel of Verizon being appointed as co-chairs.

The Big Data Working Group will focus on the privacy and security issues that currently haunt cloud computing.

“As a recognized leader in development and deployment of large scale cloud infrastructures, we are pleased to work with our fellow members at the CSA to develop best practices and standards for big data security and privacy,” Yasunori Kimura, president and CEO of Fujitsu Laboratories of America, explained.

Kimura invites organizations from around the world to join their research efforts on topics such as big data-scale crypto, data analytics for security, cloud infrastructure, policy and governance, privacy, and framework and taxonomy.

The group will work not only on the development of best security and privacy practices, but also on aiding industry and governments in adopting them.

“Everyday 2.5 quintillion bytes of data are being created resulting in a myriad number of data security and cloud-computing security concerns,” Rajan said.

“By collaborating as a global community of thought leaders and researchers, we are not only looking to help the industry overcome these challenges but also to leverage new opportunities for the monitoring and detection of security threats enabled by big data.”

The first report – to be released this fall – will focus on identifying technical and organizational problems that companies are confronted with when addressing big data privacy and security issues.

Later reports will provide actionable information, will create standards and establish test beds.
