In Japan

Fujitsu Japan has announced the release of a compact, ultra-portable computer system that will be powered by the same Intel Atom processor that is featured on almost every netbook currently available on the market. However, unlike most notebooks, which feature a 9-inch or a 10-inch display, the new Fujitsu system will sport a much smaller screen, of only 5.6 inches - which will virtually make it smaller even than ASUS' 7-inch Eee PC.

Although it might not win any beauty contests anytime in the future, the new Fujitsu LifeBook FMV Biblio U/B50 will easily be able to pass as one of the smallest Atom-based UMPCs existent on the market at the moment. Also, taking into account the notebook's small size, we can say with certainty that Fujitsu has proven itself capable of providing an Atom-powered computing system that can run a Windows Vista operating system, a thing that ASUS did not manage to do with any of its Eee PCs.

The compact 5.6-inch display can output images and video at a resolution of 1280 by 800. Just like most other portable computer systems, this UMPC also sports a built-in webcam. It also has Wi-Fi and 3G network support, as well as an HDMI port for a connection with a TV set. It has 1GB of RAM, while users can choose either a 1.8-inch hard drive of 60, 100 or 120GB capacity, or a 64GB solid state drive.

Measuring 171 x 135 x 26.5-33mm, the UMPC can be equipped with a 2900mAH battery that will bring the system's weight to 562g. A higher capacity battery of 5800mAh will raise said weight to 663.5g.

As far as pricing goes, the highest capacity model will cost you approximately $202, although you do have to wait until the company decides to release the product on the International market. The SSD model, on the other hand, isn't exactly for everybody, as it comes with a high price tag, set at $2,509.
