Fujitsu has just announced the addition of a new series of 2.5-inch hard disk drive to its mobile storage portfolio. The new MHZ2 BJ-series can spin at 7,200 rotations per minute and will be available in capacities of up to 320 GB.

Fujitsu's new drive is not the first one to pack 320 GB in a 2.5-inch form factor, nor the first one to reach 7,200 RPM speeds, but it's the first 320GB drive to spin at 7,200 rotations per minute. According to the company, the new drive is primarily targeted at high-performance mobile computing, such as high-end notebook computers and compact desktops, as well as at professional mobile solutions (graphics and video processing and other storage-intensive applications).

Earlier this month, Samsung announced the availability of its 7,200 RPM Spinpoint drive that only holds 250GB of data. Fujitsu made quite a comeback on the storage market and now it is the first manufacturer to offer 7,200 RPM speeds while keeping up the storage ante.

The MHZ2 BJ-series disks come in a standard, 9.5-centimeter form factor, to ensure maximum compatibility with the currently available notebooks. According to its tech specifications, the drive requires only 2.3 watts of power while performing read and write operations, and just 0.8 watts when idle, which qualifies it as one of the most energy-efficient models available on the notebook market.

The drive connects to the computer using a SATA-II interface, that allows for maximum transfer rates of 3.0 Gbps. The MHZ2 BJ disks will sport 16 MB of cache and will reach 10.5ms read seek time and 12.5ms write seek time. The units will hit the market in June with storage capacities of 80, 120, 160, 250 and 320GB.

The company did not announce pricing for the MHZ2 BJ series of 2.5-inch HDDs yet.
