After installing 50 enterprise servers for a major mobile carrier in Brazil, which operates a mobile network with more than 45 million subscribers (the greatest network in the southern hemisphere), Fujitsu's services were enlisted by another such company, Portugal Telecom, for a similar endeavor. Fujitsu proceeded to installing Intel-based servers that now power third-generation networks operated by the networks provider. The company's systems now deliver performance and support to the 55 million customers employing the Portugal network provider's services.

“Fujitsu’s Intel-based open Linux platforms, developed specially for mission-critical applications, deliver the performance and reliability that are absolutely necessary for telecom operators introducing NGIN applications,” Jens-Peter Seick, senior vice president x86 Server Product Division at Fujitsu Technology Solutions, said. “These new platforms allow a rapid and safe switch from more restrictive old-generation systems to data rich personal communications, which also offer Telcos improved revenue opportunities.”

Portugal Telecom needed a partner capable of powering and supporting its NGIN and Fujitsu's previous success in satisfying the Brazilian company's needs was the prime factor in the decision to enlist its services. The network provider's services are being employed by TMN and PTC, Portugal's largest mobile and fixed network, which boasts no less than seven million mobile customers and about three million fixed users, respectively. Portugal Telecom's installation features over 25 PRIMEQUEST servers, out of which 20 are PRIMEQUEST 580A range-dropping Linux servers. These are assisted by six ETERNUS8000 and six ETERNUS400 SAN storage systems.

“Customers depend on Portugal Telecom to provide reliable and uninterrupted intelligent network services. To support the delivery of such services, it is vital that our server and storage systems are capable of providing quality and high performance. Fujitsu was fully able to convince us of its all-round capabilities in meeting our defined requirements,” José Pedro Nascimento, operations director at Portugal Telecom, stated.

In addition to maintaining and providing backup for Telecom's systems, Fujitsu will also be selling its NGIN products worldwide by providing platforms for Portugal Telecom's R&D and system integration subsidiary, PT Innovation (so far, 50 PRIMEQUEST servers with six ETERNUS systems have been installed by PT subsidiaries). Fujitsu technology is also used in the telecom operator's Oracle databases.

“The ability to efficiently support our customers around the world with expertise from the competence network of the global Fujitsu group is a key advantage we have over our competitors in the market,” Takanori Katayama, corporate vice president, Product Marketing & Strategic Alliances Unit, Fujitsu Limited, commented.
