A real-time pulse reader can detect heart rate in five seconds

Biometrics are becoming part of casual tech products, and Fujitsu already wants to move beyond simple security concerns.

The company has revealed a technology which, through a camera, allows a PC or consumer electronics device to “watch” a person and determine their pulse.

Indeed, heart rate can supposedly be detected in just five seconds, time in which it calculates average color values on a person's face.

The technology then removes unnecessary light data and extracts the brightness data from the green light absorbed by hemoglobin in the blood.

Fujitsu's invention can use the camera of a computer, smartphone, tablet, or whatever else.

Oddly enough, real-time pulse detection can still be used for device access purposes, though storing health data for future analysis remains the main function here.

Fujitsu expects the technology to be put to good use this fiscal year (FY 2013).
