Fujitsu's LifeBook P1620: Yet Another Air-Like Notebook

Since Steve Jobs proudly announced Apple's MacBook Air, the whole Internet has got a new obsession: the lightweight notebook models. Ultra-mobile computers were highly praised, but the introduction of an actually fully-fledged computer that is extremely light and mobile made the users drool with pleasure. Of course, every laptop that has been released within months has been rapidly compared to the MacBook Air.

Fujitsu's LifeBook P1620 model is the newest invention from the PC vendor. It is not a new concept, but rather an update of Fujitsu's previous P1610. The new version of the LifeBook comes with a new Ultra-Low Voltage 1.2GHz U7600 Core 2 Duo processor with up to 2GB of memory and an 1.8", 4,200 RPM HDD with a total capacity of 100GB. The former version, the P1610, came with an old 1.2GHz Core Solo, 1GB memory at most, and 80GB of hard-disk drive.

The rest of specifications are identical to big brother's P1610, but that's not a shortcoming at all. The technical details include a 8.9" WXGA (1,280 x 768) touch screen display, an integrated fingerprint reader, two USB 2.0 ports, a PCMCIA slot, Secure Digital (SD) slot, 802.11a/b/g wireless, Gigabit Ethernet RJ-45 connector, a docking connector and a 3-cell battery (the 6-cell option is also available for $45). More picky users can opt-in for a more sophisticated (and much more expensive) version with solid-state drive. The 32 GB SSD will add some extra $299 to the notebook's final price tag.

Fujitsu lets users choose which operating system will power their ultra-thin notebook. You may choose between Windows Vista Business, Windows XP Tablet PC Edition 2005 or Windows XP Professional. The standard option is Windows XP Tablet PC, but an upgrade to Windows Vista will not cost you anything.

The LifeBook P1620 is available for a starting price of $1,749 (in a 512MB of RAM and a 60GB HDD configuration), but the top of the line (1GB of RAM, 80GB HDD, Bluetooth and a 6-cell battery ) will cost you around $2,224.
