Fuhu wants to make tablet usage for kids more social

If you thought the Samsung Galaxy NotePRO and TabPRO 12.2 tablets were a huge bunch, wait until you hear about Fuhu’s new supersized kid-friendly series of tablets.

As a parent, you might ask yourself why you would want to buy a super massive tablet for your kid. Especially since there have been echoing concerns related to the effects of prolonged tablet usage on children.

If a tiny tablet (you won’t be buying your kid a 12.2-incher) can have nasty repercussions on the mind of the young, a huge one should be out of the question, right?

Fuhu seems to have a totally opposite opinion. According to them, kids become awkward and secluded when spending so much time on the tablet because they play by themselves not in a group.

The answer is a maxi tablet with a huge screen kids can use with family, friends and educators. Instead of locking themselves in the crystal tower, kids can return to earth and enjoy a few hours of quality play with their peers.

So following this logic, Fuhu launched the Nabi Big Tab duo, two slates arriving with 20-inch and 24-inch version (as seen at Engadget).

Both products come with a metal frame and a built-in handle so you might be tempted to call them portable, but judging by the fact that the 20-incher weighs 10.5 lbs / 4.76 kg that’s really not the case.

The smaller of the bunch arrives with 1600 x 900 pixel resolution, while the 24-incher offers the improved standard of 1920 x 1080 res.

Funnily enough, the super huge tablet has a little tiny 1,650 mAh battery, which means kids and parents will be able to use the tablet for a lousy thirty minutes or so.

The catch is that, apparently, the tablet is not meant to be used without a power source around. So much for any degree of portability.

Anyway, in the computing department, the Big Tabs draw power from a quad-core 1.6GHz NVIDIA Tegra 4 SoC fitted with 2GB of RAM and 16GB of internal storage.

Oddly enough, these specifications could rival a lot of adult-bound tablets available on the market today. Moving along, the Big Tabs run Android 4.4 KitKat out of the box (so yes, you get access to Google Play) and arrive with proprietary Nabu software pre-installed.

Naturally, parental controls are also embedded into the tablet, so adults will be able to choose the appropriate content for them.

The 20-inch model can be yours for $499 / €374 a pop while the 24-inch model sells for $529 / €396. Expect to see them in retail this fall.
