It is now completely independent, with its own repositories and host

Fuduntu 14.12 has been released. The Fedora-based distro is becoming more independent with this latest release, but it also packs new packages and updates, along with the 'ideological' changes.

The big news is that Fuduntu is no longer dependent on Fedora, it has its own repositories and all of the packages are now hosted separately. In essence, this makes Fuduntu a stand-alone distro, despite its Fedora roots.

Fuduntu is also celebrating its birthday, it's been just one year since the project was started, as a way of simplifying Fedora, and it is now ready to stand out on its own.

"We have grown astronomically both in terms of the community, and in terms of mindshare. It is crazy to think that just a year ago Fuduntu was simply an experiment that I uploaded to SourceForge," Andrew Wyatt, Fuduntu's creator, wrote.

As the name implies, Fuduntu 14.12 is based on Fedora 14. The developers believe that the choice for the base distro was excellent, but Fedora 14 is nearing the end of its life, it will no longer be actively supported soon.

So a solution was needed for Fuduntu 14, and that solution was a complete fork.

"Today I would like to announce that we are officially forked. This means that we are now a self contained, self hosted distribution. Fuduntu is now built from Fuduntu repositories, and we only pull from Fuduntu repositories by default," Wyatt explained.

That said, Fuduntu 14.12 does come with other updates as well. Packages have been updated to their latest versions, though automatic updates would have taken care of that anyway.

Among the notable additions and updates in Fuduntu 14.12 is the latest Linux 3.0.7 kernel, X.Org 1.11.1 and the latest Flash 11 plugin. Remmina has replaced Vinagre as the default remote desktop software.
