Frugalware Linux 1.3, codenamed "Haven," has been released. The latest version comes with updated packages, but it also implements several changes like new configuration options for X.Org replacing the old monolithic config.

"The Frugalware Developer Team is pleased to announce the immediate availability of Frugalware 1.3, our thirteenth stable release. No new features have been added since 1.3rc2, but 94 changes have been made to fix minor bugs," Miklós Vajna wrote in the official announcement.

Frugalware Linux 1.3 is the thirteenth release of the Linux distribution and the second one based on the, relatively new, KDE 4 desktop environment. The desktop has been updated to KDE 4.4.5 in Frugalware Linux 1.3, a recent release but not the latest stable build.

Highlights of Frugalware Linux 1.3:

· Linux kernel 2.6.35; · Xorg Server 1.8; · GNOME 2.30; · KDE SC 4.4.5.

A new addition to Frugalware Linux 1.3 is the graphical netinstall image enabling users to use the graphical installer over the web or a local network to deploy the distro. This 'best-of-both-worlds' approach fuses the flexibility of a netinstall with the ease of use of the graphical installer.

Frugalware Linux 1.3 is also the first release to work with VMWare out of the box. Users will be able to install the virtualization software without using any workarounds.

Another major change is the switch from the old, monolithic X.Org configuration file to a more modern approach. The config options are now split into several files. What's more, X.Org uses udev to detect the hardware configuration eliminating the need for a xorg.conf file.

Finally, a couple of image libraries have been updated, specifically libjpeg 8 and libpng 1.4. The developers say this involved updating over 1,500 packages as well.
