The community has managed to create a core of helpful gamers

The development team at From Software says that it is very happy with the effects of the messaging system that was introduced in its titles and was refined for Dark Souls 2, and that most gamers were positive and were willing to share some of their wisdom with the rest of the community.

Yui Tanimura, the leader of the studio, tells VentureBeat that they quickly decided to give gamers a way to interact with one another without too many restrictions because they wanted their titles to have a sense of mystery and connection at the same time.

The game director states, “The majority are helpful messages or messages reflecting on the game. The overall trend is for users to be helpful to one another and to share their thoughts and reflections about the game. Only a handful of messages are left to make other players slip-up.”

The statements might disagree with the experience of many Dark Souls 2 players, who quickly grew to be fearful of the messages after being told to jump into an abyss a few times too many.

Everyone can rate the messages that are written in the game, and it is possible that over time the efforts of the community have allowed the more positive ones to become more prominent.

Tanimura adds, “I once laughed at a message near the corpse of a user who had suffered a painful death. The message read ‘Friend,’ and was ranked very highly. There are many messages I look at and think it’s wonderful that these users are able to come up with such interesting uses for these phrases.”

At the moment, the team at From Software is continuing to work on downloadable content for Dark Souls 2 and is still working with the community to tweak the core mechanics via updates.

Most of the company is at the moment focused on Bloodborne, the new title which it is planning to launch on the PlayStation 4 from Sony on February 5, 2015, on the Japanese market.

It’s unclear whether the studio plans to introduce a messaging system in the new game, but it might not mesh well with its darker atmosphere and entire new lore.

Bloodborne will allow gamers to experience an improved combat system which includes interesting ranged options and gives players the option to actively regain health if they are able to quickly deal damage to their enemies once they are hurt.
