Video game developer BioWare and publisher Electronic Arts have confirmed the existence of the From Ashes downloadable content package for Mass Effect 3 and revealed that the new content would be offered to all those who pre-order the game on launch day.

Writing on the BioWare Social Network, Michael Gamble, who is a producer working on Mass Effect 3, has stated, “We’re happy to confirm that Mass Effect 3: From Ashes DLC will be available at launch for all platforms.”

He added, “For those of you who have purchased the N7 Collector’s Edition (including the PC Digital Deluxe Edition), you will get this content at no extra charge. We’ll have a lot more details for you later this week! Stay Tuned!”

The From Ashes DLC, which was first known under the name From Dust, was initially shown on the Xbox Live Marketplace by mistake.

The package is set to allow players to recruit an all-new party member, a Prothean that is, presumably, the only survivor of a race that has been extinct for thousands of years.

The new character will come with a number of associated quests and BioWare has not revealed how much the From Ashes DLC will cost for those who do not get the game via pre-order.

BioWare has a history of launching significant DLC for its big titles, with the first Dragon Age game getting a day one package which included Shale, a whole new character that some felt was one of the best of the game.

Mass Effect 3 is the last game to have Commander Shepard as the protagonist, although BioWare has indicated that it will create more video games set in the same universe.

The game launches on the PC, the PlayStation 3 and the Xbox 360 on March 6 in North America and three days later in Europe.
