She's one of the hottest girls right now but, only some months ago, people were saying about Kate Upton that she'd gained so much weight she could never be a lingerie model again. In fact, things got so bad that her friends had to stage an “intervention.”

A source close to the model, who can now be seen on the cover and in the pages of the latest issue of Sports Illustrated, in a spread that will most likely catapult her to the height of lingerie modeling, tells The New York Post her friends feared she would never work again.

She's always been curvy (by industry standards) but, one year ago, Kate started to gain a lot of weight and this was threatening her career.

Eventually, all her friends gathered around her and told her just how much she stood to lose, including the much coveted cover of the sports magazine.

“She’s not your typical model. She will eat anything. She’s not assuming. She’s not into herself. She’s not very affected,” says the insider.

Kate herself admits that she usually gives in to her cravings because she doesn't believe in leading a life of restrictions about food.

She also says that she owes her current figure to her personal trainer, who helped her get in proper shape, The Post further reports.

“I never deprive myself. If I’m craving something once a week, then I’ll go have it. Ice cream or whatever, I just eat the foods I like,” she says.

Her favorite snacks are ice cream and fries, and she indulges in them whenever she feels like, which would explain how her weight ballooned so quickly.

“I have to give credit to my trainer. He definitely kept me motivated in staying in shape,” Kate also tells The Post.

“I’ve always been naturally curvy, but of course I had to get used to being in the public eye,” she adds.

It would seem that all her efforts have paid off – even if Victoria's Secret deems her too “obvious” to hire her as an Angel.
