The French Revolution setting for the upcoming Assassin's Creed Unity emphasizes uncertainty, as no one, from the Templar Knights to the Assassins, knows how to make sure that the end result of the whole event nets them an advantage.

Assassin's Creed Unity is set to debut this fall and Ubisoft has already made it abundantly clear that the new title will deliver an overhauled experience, ranging from the gameplay to the visuals and the virtual representation of Paris.

The special setting, that of the French Revolution, is also going to introduce plenty of uncertain things, as the huge event was filled with treason, shoddy alliances, and lack of clear thought on behalf of the powerful nobles.

According to Ubisoft, both the Assassins and the Templars will go through some unpredictable moments, as the rocky nature of the revolution makes it difficult to see how things are going to pan out.

"The actual history of the revolution is quite complex," Assassin's Creed Unity Writer Russell Lees tells UbiBlog. "People’s loyalties are shifting. It’s dangerous for everybody. There’s a high level of paranoia amongst everyone."

Expect plenty of drama and dissent inside the Templar order and Assassin brotherhood, according to Lees, as both are trying to make the most of the revolution but are unclear on how to actually do that.

"Nobody is in charge here," Lees adds. "Both the Assassins and Templars are finding their feet in this big cataclysm, this maelstrom of revolution. There are these huge forces at work. How can we best advance our interest in that situation? What are our interests? They might not even agree amongst themselves what their plans should be."

The Assassin's Creed team even has a historian on board, Maxime Durand, who helped emphasize in Unity that the French Revolution wasn't a single broad event, as it was actually composed of smaller things that bubbled amidst the French people for many years.

Unity players will take on the role of Arno Dorian, a nobleman who, while investigating the death of his father, uncovers some true dangers for the whole French nation throughout Paris. The story will allow players to form their own brotherhood and explore Paris in the span of the French Revolution, which lasted for around 10 years.

Assassin's Creed Unity launches in October for PC, PS4, and Xbox One platforms. For PS3 and Xbox 360 owners, Ubisoft is going to debut Assassin's Creed Rogue.
