Security company McAfee today released a new security solution able to detect rootkits on your computer and clean them before they manage to harm the system. Rootkit Detective is available for free for all the users and, since January when it was made available as a beta program, it has been downloaded by more than 110.000 times. Rootkit
Detective is an application able to detect unusual processes on your computer and remove them in a matter of seconds. In addition, the program is able to send samples to the parent company McAfee in order to detect new threats and fight against the infection.

"Rootkit Detective offers the most comprehensive rootkit detection capabilities available today," said Ahmed Sallam, lead research architect at McAfee. "We have achieved extremely high levels of accuracy, using various techniques to find anything that hides itself on a computer."

McAfee is one of the top security companies in the world, owning numerous products that are well-known for their efficiency against the computer threats. For example, McAfee VirusScan is one of the most popular antivirus products among the Internet users because it is able to detect a considerable amount of infections. Moreover, McAfee's Site Advisor is a technology used by a lot of other products because it fights against the threat that is spread using the webpages. Rootkit Detective tends to become at least as popular as the other products and become one of the top products signed by McAfee.

Rootkit Detective was developed by Avert® Labs, McAfee's top-ranked global security threat and research organization. It is a powerful tool that lets computer users look under the hood of their PC operating system and could be used, for example, when there are signs of a compromise, such as a sudden slowdown or suspicious network activity.

"Rootkit Detective uncovers hidden processes, registry entries and files and lets users safely remove or disable them upon system reboot. In addition, Rootkit Detective can scan the integrity of a PCs kernel memory and display any modification, which may also point to a system compromise," the security company said.
