Freespire has reached today the 2.0.3 version, which is an updated stable release of Freespire 2.0. It is based on Ubuntu 7.04 and besides the community involved freely distributed applications, it provides users with the choice of using proprietary software.

This build includes an update to the CNR Plugin (0.1.2600) and brings some important updates and fixes:

Config files updated:
■ sources.list (commented out ubuntu
repository sources resolving apt-get upgrade issues)

Packages upgraded:
■ cnr-client (new and improved CNR Plugin - version 0.1.2600)
■ flash9-plugin (updated to 9.0 r60 - version 9.0.60)
■ knetworkconf
■ knetworkmanager
■ kplayer (updated from 0.5.3 to 0.6.3)
■ kuser
■ sun-java6-bin
■ sun-java6-jre
■ sun-java6-plugin

Some packages were removed due to space limitation on CD, like the one containing NVU HTML editor.

Freespire is the non-commercial version of Linspire and it has some features that expand its capabilities:

■ The CNR Plugin which provides free access to many open source applications and for commercial ones is an integrated part of Linspire that was migrated also on Freespire.

■ KDE was chosen to be the main desktop environment because it is very easy to use and helps users who migrated from Mac or Windows.

■ Java, Flash and Adobe Acrobat is added when necessary to provide increased interoperability.

■ Proprietary drivers and codecs are added to expand multimedia and hardware compatibility so the user can enjoy optimum 3D graphic card support, play MP3s, WMAs, have better WiFi support etc.

Also, Freespire can be freely modified, redistributed and used by anyone who is interested in it. This distribution has a great translation team, by using the IRMA project (Internationalization Resource Management Application), a website with a simple interface where anyone can perform translations after they created a free account. The user can translate anything that's included in the distribution, permitting the user to focus on what he/she thinks is more interesting.
