The third-person action role-playing game was a hit earlier this year in Japan

Sony has announced the Western release dates of its third-person action role-playing video game Freedom Wars, coming exclusively to the PlayStation Vita handheld gaming device.

Freedom Wars was released in Japan earlier this year, being one of the last big-budget in-house releases coming from Sony for the PlayStation Vita handheld console.

The game did very well, being at the top of the Japanese software charts for weeks, as well as the most purchased digital download game on the PlayStation Store in the first two weeks after launch.

Sony has mentioned its plans to move away from supporting the platform with first-party AAA releases, so this might be your last chance to enjoy a big game on the small handheld.

Freedom Wars takes place in the year 102013, which is a pretty lazy year, considering that developers Shift, Dimps and Sony Computer Entertainment Japan Studio just added a 10 in front of the year they started working on the game.

In any case, the game is set on Earth, with the surface world lying in ruins and no longer capable of supporting life, and humans living in underground cities called Panopticons, which provide security for its inhabitants in exchange for contributions that each inhabitant has to make.

The very existence of a person is considered a crime, and criminals serving sentences have to provide free labor for the state, participating in wars as "volunteers," in order to reduce their sentences.

Criminals are forced to battle giant monsters called Abductors, and players take on the role of such a character, struggling to take down behemoths and reduce his sentence through combat, along with his partners.

The game somewhat resembles the Attack on Titan anime, with characters being able to use various accessories during combat, including a system of grappling hooks that allow them to engage in 3D combat against the lumbering beasts.

Freedom Wars is scheduled for launch on October 28 in North America and October 29 in Europe, coming to the United Kingdom and Ireland on October 31, exclusively for the PlayStation Vita.

Although the game will also be available in physical form in North America, it will only get a digital release in Europe.

Pre-ordering the game in the United States will net gamers various DLC goodies, such as Limited Edition Costumes that will allow them to personalize their Freedom Wars character with formal wear, as well as some Powerful Started Weapons, upgraded melee and long-range attack guns, and a medical supply set.

Gamers interested in purchasing the digital version of the game can get the same rewards in the October 28 through November 11 time period, available to redeem for free.
