Today, June 14th, the FreeNAS 8.0.4-p3 stable release, a free implementation of a minimal FreeBSD distribution, it is now available for download.

FreeNAS 8.0.4-p3 has an important change that addresses a security vulnerability, which if exploited successfully could lead to local kernel privilege escalation, kernel data corruption or even crash.

To exploit this vulnerability, an attacker must be able to run code with user privileges on the target system and there is no known workaround for this problem, with the exception of an update or by using FreeNAS on an 64-bit AMD CPU.

According to the developers, systems with 64-bit capable CPUs running the 32-bit FreeNAS/i386 kernel are not vulnerable, and neither systems running on different processor architectures.
