Crytek, the studio behind the Crysis series and the new Warface online shooter, believes free-to-play games will soon rival next-gen ones in terms of quality and content.

Crytek has been a major backer of the free-to-play segment, and its first title, Warface, has just been released as an open beta in North America and Europe, after becoming very popular in Russia.

The studio's boss Cevat Yerli believes that the free-to-play genre will continue to see high-quality releases that will soon rival next-gen titles.

"It's just a matter of time," Yerli told Joystiq. "We already introduced with Warface a much higher quality relative to the current generation of gaming, and Ryse is [our] first game that launches a next-generation experience. Going forward, I expect free-to-play games to catch up with next-generation offerings as well. So it's really just a matter of time."

Warface is now available for free on the PC as an open beta and will soon hit the Xbox 360 console.
