Cevat Yerli, the leader of developer Crytek, believes that free-to-play has a place in the home console gaming space and that Sony might get a significant advantage over Microsoft if the launch of such titles on the PlayStation 3 is successful.

The studio head tells MCV that, “Sony making that game is a great step forward, and they should be applauded. If Sony embraces free-to-play as a major way for PlayStation, that could be the key console.”

Sony has recently announced that Sing Star, its popular karaoke-driven series, is now using a business model that’s very close to classic free-to-play.

The publisher is also working with developer CCP, known best for their space-based MMO EVE Online, to create Dust 514, which will be launched on the Sony home consoles next year.

Players will be able to play the MMO without paying a monthly subscription.
