Free or Commercial CMSs?

- Alternatives For Websites Redesign

By: Catalin Bocanu, Web News Editor

The target of any website owner is to get a higher audience for the content presented over the Internet. But if a website looks old or does not have enough visitors to form a desired audience,
you should consider to apply a website redesign in the direction of a new content presentation form. If the website content is not appropriate for the actual Internet public needs, it is also recommended to adapt it to the new demands of the majority of your audience.

The building of a new website layout and a new content could require a lot of time, money and effort for a beginner webmaster. This approach is not really necessary to be chosen when you need a website redesign. By creating a new website based on a content management system, you will simplify the procedures of performing future updates for website layout or content.

From an objective point of view, the choice between free and commercial content management systems could only depend on webmaster principles and wishes and not on the application performance. There are many free and open source content management systems available for you to download and use, which will provide the same or maybe a higher performance and development flexibility as compared to commercial alternatives.

When you are going to select a content management system in order to construct a website, the big number of results returned by any search engine could confuse you. In the same time, you do not have to select a free or a commercial content management system based on its popularity, because the features provided could not correspond to your needs.

The best practice would be to check similar websites developed on a certain content management system platform in order to decide if you will select it to redesign your website. You can also search for reviews and opinions existing on forums or blogs regarding a certain behavior or found bugs for a given CMS application.

Most of actual content management systems have a modular architecture and the application functionality is very easy to manage by enabling or disabling certain modules. As a consequence, the possibilities of development of a new website are endless. The main advantage is that the future redesign actions could take place with less effort and in a shorter time.
